In today’s technologically advanced time, it’s easier than ever to get dates. You can sign up for a free or paid online dating site, use an app, or even go out to bars, bookstores, restaurants, and the like to meet people. However, as much as the Internet has made it simpler to find dating partners, the same rules and etiquette still apply. If you want to see your date again, make sure that you don’t talk about any of these off-limits topics.
First of all, you really shouldn’t mention your ex, at least not more than once. You may get a question about what happened in your last relationship and why it ended (although even this is a little heavy for a first date), so answer it deftly and quickly. Those who keep harping about their former flames probably aren’t over the relationship all that much though. You could become a rebound, so keep your eyes and ears open.
Next, you shouldn’t talk about negative topics. You may have had a bad day at work, you just had a fight with your mom, or you think that your coworker is vying for your position. By all means, vent to somebody like a trusted friend. However, your date is not your psychiatrist. Avoid delving into ugly topics like this so soon.
Similarly, don’t start spouting off about how all women or men are just terrible and how many dates you’ve been on without finding anyone good. This is a blanket statement and an inappropriate one at that. Dating can absolutely be frustrating, but again, save the gripes for your friends or family. You may also want to consider taking a dating break.
If you’re having a little bit of financial trouble or you just dug yourself out of the red, your date doesn’t need to know this right away. If you had to go through a major life event like bankruptcy or foreclosure, you can volunteer this if it comes up. However, don’t go around sharing this information yet. First, it’s too heavy, and second, it may stick in your date’s mind that you’re bad with money.
Although it’s common sense, some people don’t realize that it’s inappropriate to talk about how you’re playing the field. While there’s nothing wrong with dating multiple people at once, and it can even help you narrow down your options faster, you should not be volunteering how many people you’re seeing to your date. It will likely offend and upset them, and you won’t ever see this person again.
You also want to avoid mentioning relationships, marriage, or starting a family. Even if you bring up these topics in a joking manner, your date doesn’t quite understand your sense of humor yet and may think that you’re serious. You could come across as someone with baby fever who’s willing to settle down with anyone. Besides, you don’t even know if you like your date much yet. Now is not the time to be talking about weddings.
