Online dating can be a great way to meet someone. It opens you up to a pool of people that you never would have met otherwise. While online dating can be great, you need to be cautious. While you may be using the internet to find love, there are not as honest, and may not be using online dating for the same reason that you are. There are a few red flags that you should watch for when dating online.

Photos

A person’s photos can say a lot about them. At the same time, they can say nothing. If you start talking to someone online who has blurry photos, out of focus photos, or photos where they look very small, they may be trying to hide something. Pictures of them wearing a hat and sunglasses, a picture of them with a random group of friends, and pictures of them in Halloween costumes are also red flags. It is not uncommon for a person to have one or two photos like this, however, if all of the photos are like this, they may not want to be recognizable. Chances are, they are in a relationship already, and are afraid that someone will recognize them on the site, and their significant other will find out.

Impersonal Messages

If you get a message which is very impersonal, and sounds like a form letter, beware. There are people who have a standard message, which they copy and paste to every person they find attractive. For all you know, 50 other people got the same message. You want to meet someone who wants to get to know you based on your looks as well as what is included in your profile. If you do not get a message containing specific items in your profile, move on.

Refusal To Meet

You should not expect someone to want to meet in person after only an email or two, however, if they do not want to meet after weeks of messaging, it is a red flag. If you continue to ask for a date, and they continue to refuse, they may not be the person who they are claiming to be. They may also already be in a relationship, and do not want to meet in person in fear of getting caught.

Consistent Breaking of Plans

If the person that you are messaging keeps making dates and then breaking dates, it is a red flag. If they can only talk on the phone at certain times of the day, and tells you not to call them, they will call you, chances are they are not as single as they claim to be. Unfortunately, many married people go on internet dating sites to find someone to step out on their partner with, or just for validation.

When you are dating online, you never know who you are going to meet. While some are honest, and are looking for love, some are not so honest. Before you begin online dating, it is important to be able to recognize the red flags. When you do, run.
